With that big number of herbivores animals, the predator number is impressive as well, with approximately 3,000 – 4,000 lion and huge number of cheetah, leopard and hyena, this is the place to be especially when you want to witness the moment big cats do hunting for their meals.

Topi, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant, bat-eared fox, hyrax, genet, hare, porcupine, aardvark, giraffe, jackal, mangoose, crocodile, and primate such as bavoons, vervet and colobus monkey are the common animal in this area. Birding life won’t go unnoticed in this area, with an immense species of bird recorded (500 species), Serengeti is clearly the paradise for birders and birds themselves.

Birding in Serengeti National Park

Birding in Serengeti is paradise for both birds and birder-watchers, with more than 500 species, Serengeti is truly a beautiful habitat for the birds and destination for the birders. The Serengeti – Mara ecosystem is one of the Africa’s endemic bird area, this ecosystem hosts five bird species found nowhere else, half of it confirmed to the Tanzanian portion of the ecosystem.

The birds of Serengeti National Park

Lilac-breasted roller, and the 3 endangered Tanzanian species: Grey-rumped spur fowl, Fischer’s lovebird and the babbler-like Rufous-tailed weaver.

The Serengeti inhabited by a very wonderful honey-guide bird-ratel relationship worth your attention. This tiny birdcalled honey-guide has a friend called Ratel, and they have one thing in common HONEY. Their fond to honey makes them friends. This tiny bird has the ability to search and find beehives.

As the honey-guide bird leads the Ratel to bee hives. The Ratel, which is immune to the bee stings, pull down the bee hives and opens them to eat the honey. The honey guide eats the bee wax.

When to Visit?

Birdwatching

Although birdlife is generally good throughout the year, from November to April migratory birds from Europe and northern Africa are present, and many resident birds are in breeding plumage. This makes it the best time for bird watching. The best time to watch wildlife is during the Dry season, which is June to October.

Walking Safari

Suitable walking routes include the area from Olmoti Crater to Embakai Highlands and down to the Great Rift Valley, the Northern Highlands Forest Reserve and the Eastern Plains around Nasera Rock, Gol Mountains and Olkarien Gorge.

Oldonyo Lengai

Located outside NCA, to the north-east near Lake Natron, raise 1830m above the valley floor. This is also called “mountain of God”

Birdwatching

Flamingos are very common at lakes in the NCA, all of which are saline. Flamingos are filter feeders and feed on plankton.
