Bird Watching in Tarangire

This safari features the popular Northern Circuit game park.

It is known for the highest population density of elephants as compared to anywhere in Tanzania, and its thinly scattered vegetation strewn with baobab and acacia trees, making it a beautiful and distinctive location to visit.

This is a popular stop for people travelling through the northern safari circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and Serengeti. The park extends into two game controlled areas, and the wildlife is allowed to move freely throughout.

Bird Watching in Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is another great bird watching site. With more than 500 species recorded, Tarangire declares itself as the best playground for birding and photographing.

The swamps inside the Tarangire National Park, tinged green year-round, have the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. The swampy floodplains in Tarangire's southern and eastern part are important breeding grounds for the Eurasian migrants. Tarangire's woodlands are inhabited by Hoopoes, Hornbills, White-bellied go-away-birds, and Brown-headed parrots.

The park is also inhabited by several dry-country bird species at the extremity of their range, such as the northern pied babbler and vulturine guineafowl.

Serious bird-lovers should keep an eye open for flocks of the dazzlingly colorful yellow-collared lovebird, and somewhat drabber rufous-tailed weaver and ashy starling – all endemic to the dry savannah of the north-central Tanzania, migratory birds are from Novermber – April.

Game birds are also common in Tarangire National Park, such as yellow-necked spurfowl, helmeted guineafowl, and crested francolin. Other common birds are lilac breasted rollers, barbets, mousebirds, striped swallows, starlings, bee eaters, and owl plovers.

You can’t overlook the hills of Tarangire National Park, which is host to over 50 raptor species like Bateleur eagles, the Steppe Eagles (which migrate from Russia), the giant Lappet-faced Vultures, and the tiny Pygmy Falcon.

When to Visit?

Birdlife is plentiful all year round, but bird watching is at its best when the European and north African migratory birds are present (November to April). Nesting among the resident birds is taking place during this same time, so it is easy to spot birds in their breeding plumage. Wildlife viewing is best during the Dry season (June to October).
