Details of Selous Game Reserve

With the enormous size of 50,000km², which is four times bigger than the famous Serengeti National Park, this reserve house a huge variety of wildlife, and boasts itself as one of the largest game reserves in Africa.

Selous is a wild and an isolated place and is difficult to get to, but the rewards it gives to its visitors due to its sheer size and the opportunity to explore its varied landscape without ever having to bump into another human being. The Rufiji river, which is the Tanzanias largest river flows through it accompanied by its network of channels, lagoons and swamps that are home to a huge variety of birds.

When to Visit?

The Dry season, from June to October, is the best time for wildlife viewing in the park. Wildlife is easier to spot because vegetation is thinner and animals gather around the Rufiji river and the lakes.

Roads become impassable after heavy rain, and most camps close towards the end of the Wet season, in April, and reopen late May or the beginning of June. The best chance to see wild dog is during their denning season, from June to August.
