Located just outside Lake Manyara National Park and nestled in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Mto wa Mbu is one of Tanzania’s most culturally diverse towns — home to over 120 different tribes. Itinerary:
08:00 AM – Depart from Arusha or Karatu
Begin your journey with a scenic drive through the Rift Valley to Mto wa Mbu (approx. 2 hours from Arusha, 30 minutes from Karatu).

10:00 AM – Village Walking Tour
Meet your local guide and begin a walking tour through banana plantations, bustling markets, and community hubs. Learn about the daily life of different ethnic groups, visit local homes, and explore traditional irrigation systems used for rice and banana farming.

11:30 AM – Artisan Visit
Stop by a Makonde woodcarving workshop to see intricate sculptures being carved by hand. Then, visit a local art studio to view Tingatinga-style paintings and traditional Maasai beadwork.

12:30 PM – Traditional Lunch
Enjoy a delicious home-cooked Tanzanian meal prepared by local women. Dishes often include banana stew, rice, beans, ugali, and seasonal fruits. Your hosts will explain the origins of the dishes and their role in everyday village life.

01:30 PM – Banana Beer Brewing Experience
Learn how locals brew mbege, a traditional Chagga banana and millet beer. Watch the process, sample the final product, and hear stories of how this brew is used in celebrations and ceremonies.

02:30 PM – Tuk Tuk Ride or Biking Tour
Explore the lush surroundings with an optional bike ride or tuk tuk tour. Ride through rice paddies, pass by Maasai bomas, or make your way to the edge of Lake Manyara to see flamingos and other wildlife.

04:00 PM – Balaa Hill Hike (Optional)
Those with extra energy can hike up Balaa Hill for sweeping views of the village, Lake Manyara, and the Maasai Steppe. It’s the perfect photo stop to end your cultural adventure.

05:00 PM – Return Journey
Depart Mto wa Mbu and head back to your lodge or hotel in Arusha or Karatu.
