Many tourists require a visa, some nationalities are exempt, and some must receive approval before traveling. The safest approach is to check the official Tanzania Immigration system for the passport you will actually use.

Do you need a visa for Tanzania?
That depends on nationality. Tanzania publishes lists of countries whose citizens do not require a visa, those eligible for the ordinary process and those whose applications require referral approval. These lists can change, so a blog cannot safely provide one permanent answer for every passport.

Visitors combining Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar do not need two national visas. Tanzania Immigration advises applicants to enter their first destination on the form; the approved visa permits travel to both the mainland and Zanzibar.
Ordinary tourist visa and the special rule for US passports
Current Tanzania Immigration guidance lists the ordinary single-entry visa for eligible tourism visitors at USD 50, with validity of up to 90 days. United States passport holders traveling for tourism are instructed to apply for a multiple-entry visa, currently listed at USD 100. That visa can be valid for up to one year, but the maximum continuous stay is normally 90 days.
Fees, eligibility and validity can change. Confirm the amount shown inside the official application portal before paying. Never send a visa fee to a personal account or an unrelated website.
Should you apply online or obtain a visa on arrival?
An eVisa completed before travel is generally the clearest option for eligible travelers because it allows time to correct questions and carry the grant notice. Visa-on-arrival availability is not universal and should never be assumed for every nationality or entry point.
Travelers in the referral category must obtain approval before arrival. Tanzania Immigration advises referral applicants to apply well in advance—its current guidance says at least two months—and not to make non-refundable travel commitments before approval.
Even with an eVisa grant notice, carry the supporting documents used in the application. An airline or immigration officer may ask to see them.
Passport validity and blank pages
The official eVisa terms require at least six months of passport validity and at least one unused visa page when the application is submitted. Because a trip may be planned months ahead, check the passport before paying deposits rather than waiting until departure week.
The name, passport number and dates on flights, insurance and visa documents should match the passport exactly. If a new passport is issued after the application, ask Tanzania Immigration how the change affects the visa rather than assuming the old approval will transfer.

Zanzibar mandatory inbound travel insurance
International visitors entering Zanzibar must account for a separate mandatory inbound insurance requirement. The official Zanzibar tourism portal and Zanzibar Insurance Corporation state that the policy remains compulsory even when a traveler already has private medical or travel insurance.
At the review date, Zanzibar Insurance Corporation lists USD 44 per adult and USD 22 per child, with reduced categories for some regional travelers. Prices, exemptions and coverage can change, so check the current amount before purchase. Buy only through the official Visit Zanzibar insurance portal or a current link published by Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.
Keep the insurance certificate available on the phone and as a printed backup. A mainland arrival does not necessarily remove the requirement when the itinerary later continues to Zanzibar.
Yellow fever documentation
Tanzania’s yellow fever rule is based mainly on where a traveler has recently been or transited, not only nationality. Proof may be required for travelers aged one year or older arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country, including certain transits longer than 12 hours.

Arrival airports and documents
International safari travelers commonly enter through Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. Some itineraries cross a land border from Kenya or another neighboring country.
Keep the passport, visa grant notice, onward ticket, accommodation contact, insurance certificate and any required health document together in hand luggage. Do not pack essential entry paperwork inside checked baggage.
